Get away from the mental crowds and head east from the pier. When you get to the end near the arena, go under the underpass and past the scenic Asda carpark towards the cliffs on your left. There is a path all the way to Saltdean along the beach. Some good rock pools and if you're lucky you might spot some desperate surfers trying to find a wave.

If you want to get to a bit of countryside, the downs are just up the road. I'd recommend taking the bus up to Ditchling Beacon and walking to Devil's Dyke where you can get the bus back from (after a refreshing beer in the pub). There are some bus timetables in the flat as well as some OS maps if you have a car and want to explore the downs further.
